The Not-So Cold Open
France has Struck Oil - I Mean Hydrogen!
“White” Hydrogen, aka natural hydrogen, will be a game-changer for the global fuels economy
Here’s the rundown:
- Scientists in France accidentally discovered a potential deposit of naturally occurring hydrogen - aka “White Hydrogen” in the country’s Lorraine region
- The deposit could contain up to 46 million tonnes of white hydrogen, which is more than half of the world’s current annual production of grey hydrogen
- The next stage of research will involve drilling boreholes to confirm the size and extent of the deposit
The discovery of White Hydrogen will change the global fuels economy drastically, especially as interest in hydrogen continues to grow for its applications in decarbonizing heavy industry and mobility. When you burn Hydrogen, the byproduct is simply just water, and it can be utilized from energy generation to even storage. It’s expected that large deposits of the gas can be found in the US, Australia, Africa and European geographies.
Fun Fact: The current largest production of white hydrogen comes from a well in Mali, of which was discovered in 1987 when a man drilling for water whilst smoking a cigarette all-of-a-sudden caught on fire.
Stay tuned to Chris’s Climate Log for an explanation of the Hydrogen Rainbow in the future-

Summer Ray is Dressing Up as Sexy Climate Change this Halloween
This Halloween, consider thrifting or DIY-ing your costumes, because Climate Change is scary enough
Summer Ray may have a point here, if only all of her followers were subscribed to Chris’s Climate Log, maybe we could start a revolution… But seriously, if you’re considering dressing up and celebrating Halloween this year, take a step back and think about how you could reduce your costume’s environmental footprint. After all, it’s not like your “sexy cop”, “sexy nurse”, “sexy cat”, or whatever else your planning on being is that original anyway.
Here’s some things to consider that may help:
- Do I have anything in my closet that I can currently use or rewear?
- Can you thrift any of the items for your costume?
- Let’s face it, that plastic smell from the halloween store is awful anyway…
- Have you looked internally at your life, are there any areas of improvement that are scarier than you dressing up and going out this weekend?
- Was that too personal?
- Should we stick to more abstract thinking?
- At the very least is your costume recyclable?
A 2019 study showed that over 2,000 tons of Halloween costumes are sent to landfill every year, and that was in the UK alone, IMAGINE that number here in the US. This Halloween, be part of the solution, not the problem, and be safe!

Leo DiCaprio is Over Rolex, and So Should You
Swiss watchmaking’s going green, and Leo’s all in on it
Ok so recently I’ve gotten back into watches - and yes that means Chris used to be a huge watch nerd back in high school. But as I’ve entered into my “late-twenties” my fascination with wrist-horology has been resurrected. Something between the history, engineering, and a big crown with ROLEX written all over it has lured me back in. But as with any hobby or interest, there’s a lot more to consider behind the scenes as oppose to a name brand.
Enter ID Geneve - the World’s First Circular Luxury Watch Brand.
ID Geneve marries the refinement of swiss watchmaking with the innovation of sustainability practices. Their cases for example, are not just made from recycled steel, but recycled steel melted down in a solar-powered furnace that is 165 times lower than the carbon footprint of industry average steel production. Even the watch’s strap and packaging is 100% compostable. And did I mention Leo DiCaprio is their biggest fan? Oh yeah, he just recently led a seed round of CHF 2 million and seems to be repping the brand pretty heavily off - late. Their influence has surely been heard throughout the watch industry, and making significant waves compared to historic watchmakers who are trying to keep up.
