During the holidays, I saw this clip on a podcast - talking about how traditions and our subconscious behaviors contribute to climate change. The story follows a woman cooking with her child, and her child questioning why she’s cutting off the back of the ham. The mother explains that you always just cut off the back of the ham, its what you do, its what they’ve always done. But the child pushes on and asks, but why?
So the mother calls her mom and asks her why - only to find out it was because grandma only had small baking dishes, and the full ham would never fit. Fast forward, and you see the impact that tradition had for the last 20 something years, with the mom nearly passing it on to her child, of cutting off the back of the ham and throwing it out.
